Nutriheart

Project Nutriheart

According to the "European Cardiovascular Disease Statistics 2008"(Health Economics Research Center - Department of Public Health, University of Oxford, European Heart Network and III., 2008), the cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in western population and in developing countries. For this reason, more than 4.3 million people, equivalent to 48.3% of all deaths, with a higher percentage of women (57%) than men (43%), die in Europe every year.
The economic costs to face this emergency are impressive: cardiovascular diseases have costed in 2006 about 192 billion euro, due to the 57% (110 billion) in health care costs, 21% (40 billion) in lost productivity and for 22% (42 billion) informal care. The direct health care costs amounted to 223 euro / year per person: they are diseases that have the highest in Europe economic and humans costs. Many aspects of lifestyle, such as smoking, diet, physical activity and alcohol consumption are jointly responsible for these conditions. As for the diet, which is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, eating habits, very different from country to country in the past, are now converging: in fact, the diet of the countries of northern Europe is improving, but is worsening in the Southern European countries, such as Italy, Central and Eastern Europe.

Sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie diets, increase the obesity diseases, even in children, and favors the rise of diabetes, hypertension and coronary diseases. The cellular and tissue injury mediated by free radicals is considered one of the main mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants molecular mechanisms ,normally active at the cellular and tissue level perform protective action in the body: some functional nutrients are able to reduce the cardiovascular risk by increasing the antioxidant capacity of the organism. Another important component in the development of these pathologies, is the genetic predisposition in both the direct risk and the one induced by obesity and incorrect nutrition. The analysis of genetic predisposed factors by increasing the number of genes related to them, and the analysis of foods and their improvement in terms of elimination of the components active in the rising of such pathologies are crucial in the prevention of these diseases.

Nutriheart has been realized thanks to the synergic action between the excellence of public research in the region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the considerable potential from the industrial research and the experimental development carried out by local companies for the realization of various new types of products and services. This combined and highly interdisciplinary action to the identification of genetic factors and molecular mechanisms that predispose to the onset of cardiovascular disease and to the study of the principles of food predisposed or protective for these diseases either directly or through other conditions such as diabetes , hypertension, obesity. Moreover, the timely dissemination of the regional and national scientific results aims to the improvement of nutrition education and the building of a good foundation for the design of new therapeutic strategies. The use of the data from studies of population residing in the region guarantees that the first users of the product will be just the citizens of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
